Prices vary depending on group size, hotel standards, and how you'd like to tailor your itinerary.
Upon arrival at Urumqi Diwopu International Airport, your private driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel.
If arriving early, we recommend a self-guided stroll through Hetian Er Street (和田二街) or Lingguan Alley (领馆巷) — two of Urumqi's most authentic food streets. Try Kaobaozi (baked lamb buns), Yangrou Chuan (lamb skewers), and handmade ice cream. It's the perfect introduction to the vibrant Central Asian atmosphere of Xinjiang.
Transfer: Airport → city center, approx. 30 km / 40 min
After breakfast, head north along the S21 Aral–Urumqi Expressway, a scenic highway opened in 2021 that cuts straight across the Junggar Basin. It's known as "Xinjiang's most beautiful desert highway."
En route, drive through the Gurbantünggüt Desert — China's second-largest desert (48,800 km2). Unlike the pure sand seas of the Taklamakan, this desert features semi-fixed dunes dotted with saxaul forests (梭梭林) . In autumn, the saxaul turns brilliant gold. Wild camel herds are occasionally spotted — a great stretch for wide-angle desert photography.
View from a distance the Kalamaili Nature Reserve, China's largest protected area for hoofed animals. Look out for Przewalski's horse (the only true wild horse species still alive today) and Mongolian gazelles galloping across the steppe.
Pass by Ulungur Lake, Xinjiang's second-largest freshwater lake. In autumn, the lake is mirror-like, surrounded by golden reeds and tens of thousands of migratory birds gathering for their southward journey — a natural bird photography paradise.
Arrive in Burqin County in the evening. Visit the Burqin Riverside Night Market to taste local cold-water fish (pike perch, five-black fish), paired with naan bread and kvas (卡瓦斯) — the perfect end to a long drive.
Drive: Approx. 550 km / 6-7 hours
This morning, drive into the Altai Mountains toward Kanas National Geological Park. The winding mountain road passes through dense birch and Siberian spruce forests — already stunning before you even enter the park.
Upon arrival, take the scenic shuttle bus into the core area and begin the Kanas Three Bays Boardwalk Hike (approx. 5 km, flat and easy):
- Fairy Bay (神仙湾) — Best visited in early morning when mist hovers over the emerald water, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. A top photography spot.
- Moon Bay (月亮湾) — The Kanas River forms a graceful S-curve here. A pair of shoals inside the bay resemble footprints — local legend says they were left by Genghis Khan.
- Wolong Bay (卧龙湾) — A sandbank shaped like a coiled dragon lies in the middle of the river, surrounded by dense forest.
In the afternoon, optional lake cruise (approx. 40 min) to explore deeper waters of Kanas Lake. The lake's color shifts from turquoise to deep blue-green depending on the mineral content and sunlight angle. Your guide can share the famous "Lake Monster" legend that adds a touch of mystery to this pristine alpine lake.
Drive: Burqin → Jiadengyu, approx. 140 km / 3 hours (mountain road)
Note: Hotels in Jiadengyu and Hemu have a policy: breakfast is only provided if guests dine at the hotel's restaurant for dinner. Please confirm upon check-in.
Return to Kanas in the morning for a deeper exploration. Climb Guanyu Pavilion (观鱼台) — the highest viewpoint overlooking Kanas Lake. It takes about 1,068 steps (30-40 min, moderate difficulty with resting platforms along the way) to reach the top. The reward: a panoramic bird's-eye view of Kanas Lake winding through the Altai Mountains like a blue-green silk ribbon. On misty days, the scene looks like a Chinese ink painting come to life.
Afterward, drive to Hemu Village (禾木村) , a journey through the Altai Mountains lined with golden birch and larch forests in autumn.
Check into a traditional Tuva wooden house guesthouse. In the late afternoon, walk across Hemu Bridge and watch the Kanas River flow through the village. Capture the classic scene of wooden houses releasing evening cooking smoke against the golden mountain backdrop — this is the most iconic moment in "China's Most Beautiful Village."
Drive: Jiadengyu → Hemu, approx. 60 km / 2 hours
Wake up early (recommended 6:30-7:00 AM) and head to Hemu Observation Platform (walk or take shuttle). Watch the famous "Hemu Morning Mist" — sunlight piercing through mist onto the pointed wooden roofs of Tuva houses, birch forests glowing golden, smoke rising from chimneys. This scene is widely regarded as one of China's "Top 10 Sunrise Views" by photographers.
Spend the morning freely exploring the village: wander through courtyards, visit a Tuva family (optional add-on experience) to learn about this Mongolian-origin ethnic group's unique traditions and lifestyle.
In the afternoon, drive to Rainbow Beach (五彩滩 / Wucaitan) — a colorful Yadan landform on the banks of the Irtysh River. The best time to visit is sunset (approx. 7:00-8:00 PM, varies by season), when the red, yellow, and purple rock layers glow under the golden light. Across the river, lush green meadows create a dramatic contrast — "one river, two worlds."
Return to Burqin after sunset.
Drive: Hemu → Rainbow Beach, approx. 160 km / 3 hours; Rainbow Beach → Burqin, approx. 24 km / 30 min
Drive south along National Highway 217, passing through the Karamay Oilfield — thousands of "nodding donkeys" (pumping units) stretch across the vast Gobi desert, a unique industrial landscape.
Arrive at Urho Devil City (World Devil City) , a wind-eroded Yadan landform ranked by Chinese National Geography as "China's Most Beautiful Yadan" No. 1. Take the scenic mini-train into the core area to see natural sculptures like "Sphinx", "Peacock Greeting Guests", and "Devil Couple". The shapes and colors change dramatically with the angle of light. The best time to visit is 1 hour before sunset, when the rock formations resemble an ancient castle city under shifting shadows — incredibly cinematic.
Arrive in Kuitun City in the evening. Try the legendary Xinjiang Big Plate Chicken (大盘鸡) — tender chicken, soft potatoes, and wide belt noodles soaked in rich sauce. It's the ultimate comfort food after a long day on the road.
Drive: Burqin → Kuitun, approx. 460 km / 6 hours (including Devil City visit)
Visit Dushanzi Grand Canyon in the morning — a canyon carved over millions of years by snowmelt from the Tianshan Mountains. The cliffs are as sheer as if cut by a knife, reaching depths of up to 200 meters. Standing at the edge, overlooking the vertical cliffs and the Kuitun River winding below, the visual impact is breathtaking. Thrill-seekers can try the cliff swing (optional, approx. ¥100/person) that swings out over the 200-meter drop. Compared to other Xinjiang canyons, Dushanzi is known for its dramatic steepness and gray-black color palette, creating a desolate, epic atmosphere.
Return to Urumqi in the afternoon and visit Hongshan Park (红山公园) , the city's landmark. Climb the Far-Viewing Tower (远眺楼) for a panoramic view of the entire Urumqi city, with Tianshan snow peaks in the distance. The Red Hill Pagoda (镇山宝塔) , built in 1788, is the symbol of Urumqi. At sunset, the pagoda bathed in golden light is a classic Urumqi photo.
Drive: Kuitun → Dushanzi Grand Canyon, approx. 30 km / 40 min; Dushanzi → Urumqi, approx. 250 km / 3 hours
Private transfer to Urumqi Airport based on your flight schedule. We recommend arriving 3 hours early for international flights.
If your flight is in the afternoon or evening, a morning visit to Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar (Erdaoqiao Market) can be arranged — one of the largest bazaars in Central Asia. Shop for dried fruits, carpets, traditional musical instruments, and handicrafts as souvenirs.
Transfer: City center → airport, approx. 30 km / 40 min

Please see our answers below:
1. We arrange a private vehicle with an experienced local driver throughout the journey. Although some Miao and Dong villages are located deep in the mountains, the roads are in good condition, and you can enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery comfortably between stops.
2. Yes, cultural interaction is one of the highlights of this tour. You will experience the Miao welcome ceremony with the 12-course "block-the-door wine," visit local craft workshops, and enjoy authentic village life in places like Huanggang and Zhaoxing.

Combining Yangshuo Tour with Other Destinations
Hi Amara,
Thank you for your message! The ideal length of stay in Yangshuo depends on your travel style, but we're happy to share some suggestions.
1. A one-day trip is enough to experience the most iconic highlights, including the Yulong River scenery, West Street area, and countryside landscapes. It is a great option for travelers staying in Guilin with limited time.
2. Longji and Yangshuo are located in different directions, so combining both in one day would make the schedule too rushed. We usually recommend arranging them as separate day trips or adding an extra night.
3. If you have more time, staying overnight allows you to enjoy Yangshuo's relaxed evening atmosphere, local restaurants, and countryside scenery without rushing back to Guilin.
Questions About Sunrise, Photography & Best Hiking Route
Hi Isolde,
Thank you for your message! We're glad to hear that you're interested in this Huangshan journey. Huangshan is one of the best destinations in China for sunrise and landscape photography, and we'd be happy to help you arrange a route that balances beautiful views and comfortable walking.
1. The sunrise viewpoint depends on your hotel location and weather conditions, but popular options include Bright Summit and areas near Beihai.
2. Yes, we can adjust the route according to your interests. Bright Summit is one of Huangshan’s classic viewpoints, while Xihai Scenic Area offers some of the most dramatic mountain landscapes. We can recommend the best combination based on your hiking preference and available time.
3. The hiking distance depends on the route selected. The classic Back Mountain route after taking the Yungu Cable Car is relatively comfortable, while some areas such as Xihai involve more stairs and longer walking. Our guide can help adjust the pace during the tour.
4. Usually, we recommend starting early to enjoy the quieter mountain atmosphere and better lighting for photography. The exact timing will depend on the sunrise time and weather conditions.
We hope you enjoy capturing the most beautiful moments of Huangshan!
