We drive directly to Huanghuacheng, the only Great Wall section where ramparts plunge into lake water, a one-of-a-kind landscape unseen at Badaling or Mutianyu. Start with a gentle yet rewarding lakeside ascent to the west ramparts, wandering along well-preserved Ming battlements dotted with original watchtowers and weathered grey bricks. Your guide will unfold the 600-year frontier defense history, recounting border garrison tales and construction legends of the Ming army. After land hiking, board a private electric boat gliding across calm Haoming Lake, witnessing the iconic curved wall stretching into emerald water, framed by green mountain slopes and wild lotus ponds. The cruise lasts around 40 minutes, with unobstructed panoramic shooting angles for landscape photography.
Post-lunch, hike 15 minutes downhill to the centuries-old Ming Chestnut Orchard, dotted with gnarled ancient chestnut trees planted by frontier soldiers. Walk shaded stone paths winding through the orchard; in autumn you may witness local villagers harvesting wild chestnuts. Rest at a mountain tea shack serving homemade chestnut cakes and wild herbal tea, a quiet break after wall trekking. The orchard visit takes roughly 40 minutes.
Drive 10 minutes to a secluded courtyard mountain homestay tucked at the foot of the mountains, far from tourist bustle. Settle into clean, cozy mountain guest rooms with mountain-view balconies.
Optional bonfire and stargazing session after dinner: clear mountain skies offer unbeatable night sky views over the silhouetted Great Wall. Rest overnight at the homestay to recharge for the full-day Jiankou hiking challenge tomorrow.
After early mountain breakfast, transfer 40 minutes to Xizhaizi Village, the starting base for Jiankou's classic west-line hardcore trek. Your guide will deliver a detailed safety briefing, share trail hazard reminders and adjust backpack weight distribution before we set off on the full-day ridge hike (approx. 7–8 hours total walking time).
The hike begins with a forest ascent to Nine-Eye Tower, hailed as “the No.1 Watchtower of Wanli Great Wall”. This massive two-story tower features nine observation windows on each wall, standing at the triple junction of inner and outer Ming Great Wall lines. Wander its vaulted brick interior, admire intact ancient stone carvings and overlook layered rolling mountain ranges stretching endlessly into the distance. Continue east along the rugged West Great Wall, traversing grass-covered ramparts with minimal renovation, retaining fully primitive wild wall aesthetics.
A 1-hour ridge hike leads toBeijing Knot, the legendary "Great Wall Junction". At this landmark, three separate Great Wall ridges converge into one: east toward Mutianyu, north to Nine-Eye Tower, west linking Huanghuacheng. Pause for a long rest break here, take panoramic photos and listen to the guide's explanation of Ming border military layout strategies.
Proceed onward to Jiankou's most famed dangerous stretches: Eagle Flying Backward and Heavenly Stairs. Eagle Flying Backward perches atop a sheer precipice; even eagles must tilt upward to fly past its steep cliffs, with near-vertical brick ramps testing hikers' stamina and balance. Next comes Heavenly Stairs, a 70–80-degree steep stone staircase with weathered slippery surfaces, the ultimate challenge of this hiking route. Our guide will assist with safe climbing and provide handhold tips for all steep passages. Complete the west-line crossing and follow a shaded mountain trail downhill back to Xizhaizi Village. Recount today's epic hiking journey while resting for Day 3's east-line Jiankou segment.
After breakfast, start the Jiankou east-line trekking section with lighter overall mileage, focusing on photogenic eastern watchtowers and gentle ridge vistas.
Climb uphill from the village trailhead to General's Pass, a narrow mountain gap guarded by a complete ancient defense tower, where Ming generals once stationed troops to block northern nomadic invasions. Continue to Jiankou Notch—the origin of the name "Jiankou Great Wall", where the wall bends sharply like a fully drawn bow with an arrow nocked. Capture signature postcard shots of the iconic V-shaped wall curve surrounded by dense green valleys.
Hike eastward to Zhenbei Tower, the highest eastern observation tower of Jiankou, offering a sweeping bird's-eye view of the entire Jiankou valley and distant Mutianyu Great Wall. Further along the ridge lies Ox Horn Edge, a twisting wall ridge shaped like ox horns, with soft rolling slopes ideal for relaxed walking and landscape shooting.
Finish the east-line hike via a forest trail descent back to the village parking lot. Enjoy a casual farewell lunch of local mountain specialties at a village restaurant. After the meal, our private vehicle drives you back to your hotel or designated address in central Beijing, concluding your 3-day immersive wild Great Wall deep hiking adventure.
