Hangzhou Intangible Cultural Heritage & Grand Canal Day Tour

BEST PRICE
HOT SALE
1 DAY

Hangzhou Intangible Cultural Heritage & Grand Canal Day Tour is a private full-day tour (8-10 hours) designed for culturally curious international travelers who want to experience Hangzhou beyond West Lake. The itinerary combines two UNESCO-recognized heritage sites—the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and Xixi Wetland—with hands-on traditional craft workshops. Guests start with a private electric boat ride through Xixi Wetland's waterways, followed by a local lunch by the canal. In the afternoon, they board a canal boat from Wulinmen Pier to Gongchen Bridge, learning the Grand Canal's 2,500-year history along the way. The highlight is a visit to a heritage workshop where guests create their own national-level intangible cultural heritage item—either a Wang Xingji fan or a Yuhang oil-paper umbrella—under the guidance of a master craftsman, and take it home as a souvenir. The tour is fully private with an English-speaking guide and exclusive vehicle, offering a crowd-free, in-depth alternative to Hangzhou's typical sightseeing routes.

Tour Highlights

- Dual World Heritage Experience: Visit the Grand Canal (UNESCO World Heritage) and Xixi Wetland (National Wetland benchmark) in one day—crowd-free and more authentic than West Lake
- Make Your Own National Heritage: Wang Xingji fan or Yuhang oil-paper umbrella, guided by a master craftsman—take it home as "China's memory you can carry"
- Classroom on the Canal: Cruise from Wulinmen Pier to Gongchen Bridge while learning the 1,800-km canal's 2,500-year history
- Genuine Local Depth: No tourist traps—this is about heritage craftsmanship and slow canal life that locals love
- Fully Private Service: Private guide + exclusive vehicle + flexible timing, perfect for culturally curious discerning travelers

Xixi Wetland Exploration
Depart from your hotel in downtown Hangzhou by private air-conditioned vehicle to Xixi Wetland, China's first national wetland park, often called the "Kidney of Hangzhou." Board a traditional sculling boat (yáo lǔ chuán) and glide through winding waterways lined with reeds, persimmon groves, and ancient camphor trees. Watch for egrets skimming the water as your guide explains the wetland's ecological significance and its history as a retreat for Ming and Qing dynasty literati—it is said to have inspired scenes from Dream of the Red Chamber. Step ashore to stroll through Yanshui Yuzhuang and Hezhu Street, where traditional fishing village life has been preserved.

Stroll Along Grand Canal Cruise
After lunch, proceed to Wulinmen Pier to board a canal cruise heading north along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. At 1,800 km long and over 2,500 years old, this is the longest and oldest man-made waterway in the world—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the 40-minute cruise, your guide will bring to life the canal's history as the "economic spine" of imperial China, the grain-tribute (cáo yùn) system that kept the empire fed, and how the canal shaped Hangzhou's urban identity. Disembark at Gongchen Bridge, the iconic stone arch bridge marking the Grand Canal's southern terminus. Built in the Ming dynasty, the bridge offers a sweeping view of canal-side houses and working cargo boats—the "living canal" in action.

Gongchen Bridge Historic District & Intangible Heritage Craft Workshop
Walk through the Gongchen Bridge West Historic District (Qiaoxi Straight Street), one of the best-preserved canal neighborhoods in Hangzhou. Cobblestone lanes are lined with late-Qing and early-Republican era residences, granaries, and wharfs, now converted into museum clusters and artisan workshops. Your main event: a hands-on session with a master craftsman to create either a Wang Xingji fan or a Yuhang oil-paper umbrella (choose one). Wang Xingji, founded in the Qing Guangxu era (1875), is a national-level Intangible Cultural Heritage brand renowned for its hand-painted sandalwood fans. Under expert guidance, you will paint or assemble your own piece—a "memory of China" you can carry home. The remainder of the afternoon is free to explore the neighborhood's teahouses and artisan boutiques before your driver returns you to your hotel.

Much more fun than I expected

I booked this mostly because my husband is obsessed with anything involving AI, but I ended up enjoying it just as much. The driverless taxi was the biggest surprise — sitting inside and watching the car make its own decisions felt a little strange at first! The robot dog was also hilarious. Our guide explained things without making it feel like a technology lecture, which I really appreciated.

Thanks, Eamon! We love hearing that the tour surprised you in the best way. The driverless taxi can feel a little odd at first, but once you settle in, it's a pretty memorable experience. Glad you both had fun exploring Shenzhen's tech side!

The trains made the route surprisingly easy

I had never traveled around China by high-speed train before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Once we got the hang of it, it was actually one of the easiest parts of the trip. Having someone meet us at the stations was especially helpful because some of the stations are enormous. We could just get off the train, find our driver and move on.

Thanks, Marlowe! Glad to hear our train journeys turned out to be easier than expected. Those big stations can definitely feel a bit overwhelming at first, so it's great to hear that having our driver there made things smoother. Hope you enjoyed the rest of the trip!

A Photographer's Kind of Day

If you like old architecture, bring a camera. Badaguan was probably my favorite part because every street seemed to have a slightly different look. The church and railway station were also great photo stops. I liked that the tour wasn't only about famous sights — there was plenty of time to notice small details along the way.

Thanks, Soren! We're delighted that the architectural side of Qingdao caught your eye. The city has so many small details that are easy to miss when you're in a hurry.

Definitely earned its reputation

I knew Mount Tai would be the big highlight for me, but it was still better than expected. The views kept changing as we went higher, and there was something really special about seeing the old temples and inscriptions along the mountain. The whole trip was also very well organized. We had enough time at each place without feeling like we were constantly watching the clock.
